The Dash For Germany by Mark Littlejohn
Great Naval Battles of World War Two.
The Channel Dash -12th February, 1942 -the MTB's attack. With shells
from South Foreland battery landing nearby; the Scharnhorst, leading
the German squadron, comes under attack from the British MTB's
commanded by Lt-Cdr Nigel Pumphrey. German E-boats and destroyer
Friedrich Ihn engage the MTB's as low flying FWI90's, with wheels and
flaps down, look out for expected torpedo bombers.
A combination of factors, poor weather, engine trouble, the high speed of the enemy ships and the actions of the German escorts, prevented the MTB's from closing to torpedo range allowing the enemy to escape without damage and head towards the safety of German home waters.
